Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the 8 academic disciplines of Vel Tech. The department, with student staff ratio of 15:1 supported by faculties from reputed institutions like IITs and AnnaUniversity, is headed, by Mr.G.Sivakumar who has rich teaching and industrial experience. About 30% of faculty members are Ph.D holders. Mechanical Engineering programme is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation.

The placement record of Vel Tech is highly impressive. By the end of the 6th or beginning of the 7th semester, students are exposed to placement opportunities and get selected in campus interviews with attractive packages.Vel Tech which has high standards and close interaction with the industry brings some of the best recruiters in the industry for campus interviews.
